music video monday ~ 22
Psycho Killer / Qu'est-ce que c'est?

This week's song was released in December of 1977. The official music video for said song was released on June 5, 2025, roughly fifty years after the fact. This is not normal, in case you were wondering if it was. I'm glad that they waited because I find immense pleasure in this music video coming out right now. The banal, quotidian existence each of us slogs through every day is effectively shown through the magic of editing. Things tend to feel or look the same over time. Patterns emerge. It asks, are we what changes from day to day?

Though this video feels like present day, there's not a smartphone in sight. If Saoirse Ronan character's had one, she'd resort to its alluring glow in each frame – and her outlandish emotional outbursts would remain trapped within. At least that's my take. Every time someone reaches for, or checks, their smartphone, I try to figure out what they are really feeling, or avoiding feeling. I assume this is what is happening with others, because this is often what happens to me. The line is two people long? Phone. The next sentence on the blank page just isn't coming? Phone. The light is red? Phone. My attention is wandering while I'm on the phone? Phone.

But back to the video... There's some real filmmaking happening inside, a solid visual language on display. The locations. The set design. The wardrobe. The props. The editing. The color palette. A rich tapestry. (It even holds up with the sound off!) Saoirse Ronan – who shares my birthday! – absolutely crushes this. Her character lets it all out in myriad ways. And that's more than enough for me. Feel your feelings!

But before we get to the video, let's enjoy the many faces and outfits of her character, which are easy to miss during the fast paced edit.

I can't seem to face up to the facts
I'm tense and nervous and I
Can't relax
I can't sleep 'cause my bed's on fire
Don't touch me I'm a real live wire
Psycho Killer
Qu'est-ce que c'est?
fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa far better
Run run run run run run run away

Without further ado, I present "Psycho Killer," by the Talking Heads...

On Thursdays, he recommends a book, movie, show, art piece, or link to some dusty corner of the internet that he believes either 1.) adds to the human experience, or 2.) serves as a coping mechanism in the year 2025.
