music video monday ~ 25
Living in the wake of overwhelming changes / We've all become strangers / Even to ourselves

There's some commentary going on in this morning's video, which is by Weyes Blood. For those curious, her stage name is a play on the title of an outstandingly weird yet poignant Flannery O'Connor novel Wise Blood. Seriously, it's weird – and kind of great. An excerpt from the synopsis on Wikipedia:

During a rainstorm, Emery seeks refuge under a theater marquee, and learns that a gorilla will be brought there to promote a new jungle movie. An excited Emery stands in line to shake the animal's hand, but is startled to find that the gorilla is actually a man in a costume who, unprovoked, tells Emery to "go to hell."

...but back to today's video. Her holding a golden football trophy and waving goodbye at the end. An animated cell phone eating a dead person's insides...

Mercy is the only / Cure for being so lonely

Commentary for sure, but I won't get into that right now. Discuss amongst yourselves if you'd like.

Instead, I'll share two frames from a short video I directed for an assignment in an online directing class. The challenge was to tell a story in one shot with only a camera pan in the middle. It was tougher than I expected, but it came together in the end.

The story: A food stylist makes a delicious meal, but renders it inedible as she adds toxic ingredients to make it look even more mouth-watering in the picture. All while in reality she eats ice cream for her dinner hunched over her laptop. Commentary? Maybe.

This all ties together, trust me, because the music I chose to play in the background of my video was... "It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody" by Weyes Blood – which you can hear by clicking on the video below. This post is kind of all over the place, but I think I stuck the landing – and I wrote it while wearing a gorilla suit*.

Weyes Blood - "It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody" (Dir. Charlotte Ercoli)

* It's a new thing I'm trying: method writing.

On Thursdays, he recommends a book, movie, show, art piece, or link to some dusty corner of the internet that he believes either 1.) adds to the human experience, or 2.) serves as a coping mechanism in the year 2025. Note: this is not, and never will be, self-help content.
